Job description

Narcity.com is a digital-only news & travel site that reaches over 20M people monthly. We are a group of passionate and creative individuals who are devoted to creating the best local content for our readers.

We are on a mission to help our readers discover everything that’s new, now, and next where they live — because it’s the most interesting place in the world.

What We’re Looking For:

Narcity.com is currently looking for an extremely motivated, skilled and passionate Reporter to join our rapidly expanding editorial team. The candidate should be located in Vancouver.

We are seeking a storyteller who loves exploring and wants to express it through the creation of engaging, relatable, mainstream content that every Canadian will be talking about.

Narcity Reporters are as excited about covering hidden waterfalls as they are announcing Starbucks’ brand new spring menu. If you are always the first to listen to Premier John Horgan’s press conferences or Dr. Bonnie Henry’s health updates, this position is for you.

Narcity Reporters are ambitious and independent thinkers who know what millennials care about. Our writers want to be the best source of information for their communities, whether it’s telling readers about new public drinking bylaws, covering forest domes available for rent, or announcing new summer food festivals that everyone should know about.

You Will Make An Impact By:

  • Researching, pitching and writing trending news and travel articles
  • Writing 3-5 stories per day (350 words)
  • Creating compelling packaging in the Narcity voice
  • Properly citing information that is factually accurate
  • Breaking stories and investigating fascinating topics with solid reporting
  • Working with Narcity Editors to make necessary edits and continually improving your craft

Our Ideal Candidate:

You have:

  • Six months of professional writing and reporting experience at a digital news publisher and/or a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communications, or a related field
  • An obsession with tight deadlines and team brainstorming
  • The ability to spot catchy, unique angles while staying true to the Narcity voice
  • A deep knowledge of what is happening and trending in news, eat & drink, real estate, and travel
  • A passion for a mix of research, feature stories, and viral topics

You are:

  • Excited about working with your editor to cover fast-paced, trending news
  • Interested in picking up the phone and interviewing folks in person
  • Strongly familiar with various style guides, especially AP Style
  • Available to work with our Associate Editor Sunday through Thursday starting at 10:30 a.m. PST
  • Obsessed with making bucket lists for everything everywhere, and the person who always knows what’s happening before the word is out

Position Type:

This is a remote position. We are looking for a candidate that is located in Vancouver. Candidates considered will be hired on a per-article, freelance contract. Rates are commensurate with experience.

More About Us:

The name Narcity comes from the belief that we should all be incredibly proud of our cities. Show us your hometown pride! If this resonates with who you are, take the first step and apply, we can’t wait to talk with you.

Narcity.com is owned and operated by Narcity Media, a digital-only media publisher founded in 2015 in Toronto, Canada. We are a reremote-firstmote first company which means you can work from anywhere in your city!
